Why Start a Podcast about Small Businesses?

By Dan Nicholson

After coming up with the podcast idea of listening to inspiring stories of entrepreneurship, Sagan and I launched our first small business podcast episode (sponsored by Winnipeg Comedy Festival) featuring a guest interview with Monica of Ethero Events, secured 10 additional interviewees, and five official episode sponsors… in just 10 days.

I wish I could say I’ve been sitting on this idea for months or had a grand vision of its execution, however this was not the case. In fact, I had the idea for creating a podcast while listening to another podcast during rush hour traffic—how original.

I was listening to the latest episode of Sherpa’s Talking Shop (the first podcast I helped produce) where the current hosts, Stew Moffatt and Mike Brown, had given me a congratulatory shout-out on my new role with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. That simple shout-out made me realize how much I missed sharing the mic with smart individuals and brilliant storytellers. This turned into a half-baked thought of kick-starting my own podcast.

The next day, I was sitting in my car on the drive home listening to CBC’s Under the Influence podcast. As I continued to noodle around what my own podcast might be about, I thought about how much research and time goes into the making of each Under the Influence episode. As a full-time digital marketer and part-time small business owner, I only have the time to talk about the things I know with authority, and I did not want to talk about digital marketing—I do that every day.

Four years ago, I was watching a video gamer’s YouTube channel where he was doing a special fan mail episode because he had hit 100,000 subscribers. One of the questions the fan had asked was, “How did you grow your YouTube channel to 100,000 subscribers?” His answer was as simple as this: “I wanted to create a channel that I would want to watch, and so I did.” That quote has stuck with me all these years.

As a result, while thinking about creating my own podcast, I shifted my perspective and thought “What would I listen to?”

It dawned on me that I want to know more about starting and growing a small business with the focus on Canadian content. I’m a huge fan of documentaries and the stories of people’s lives. The life of an entrepreneur is a grind and full of failures and mistakes. As outsiders, we only see the success of all their hard work, and I wanted to know more about the individual journey each entrepreneur makes to get where they’re at today.

And thus, the idea behind Candid Conversations is just that, to discuss the successes and failures of an entrepreneur’s journey, to understand what drives them and where they are headed for the future, all the while, helping our listeners start their own business or jump into an industry they may not have thought of before. This is a podcast by and for small business owners and communications specialists, to answer tough questions and share real, candid stories.

If there’s one point I’ve heard many times from other business owners, is that owning a business isn’t about making money—that’s just a bonus of loving what you do.
